Same room, same boards, sanded flat and refinished.
We took this floor back to clean, flat wood with Lagler sanders that collect the dust as they go, filled and refined the surface, then finished it so the color and sheen read evenly from wall to wall.

Refinishing, new floors and finishes, all done in-house.
We sand and finish traditional wood floors on site, supply and install new ones, and help you pick a finish that suits how your house gets used.

Cleaning and restoration
In some cases we can clean and restore the floor you have. Text a few photos and we'll give you a fair, straight answer.
Text us photosNo dishout, no chatter, no waves.
Wave and drum marks, chatter, and the dished boards people here call Colorado dishout come from rushed sanding or sanders that aren't maintained. Once finish goes over them, they show every time the light hits the floor.
We work on one principle: floors that are sanded flat and properly finished last longer, and they look better the whole time.
- 01
Flat and fresh
We sand methodically with Lagler equipment, which collects the dust so your house stays clean.
- 02
Filling the void
We vacuum, check for loose boards and secure them, then fill with a color-matched filler.
- 03
Refined, not rough
Several rounds of refinement bring the floor to an even burnish, smooth to the touch and ready for finish.
- 04
Finishing first
Stain and finish go on with the same methodical routine every time, so the floor is finished right the first time.
Choose a finish by how you live on the floor.
Every finish has its own care routine. We walk you through it during the job and make sure you have the right cleaning products.
| Finish | Good to know | Time out of the house |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion varnishOften called Swedish finish | Chemically cured for strong adhesion and scratch and chemical resistance, and it keeps its clarity. A good choice for homes with pets. | 1 to 2 evenings |
| Oil-based polyurethaneSolvent-borne urethane | A simple, proven finish and the more budget-friendly option. Durable when maintained, and it builds a patina over time. | 1 to 2 evenings |
| Water-based polyurethaneOne or two component | Cures faster with very little odor. Two-component versions are chemically cross-linked for better scuff and chemical resistance. | 24 hours minimum |
| Hardwood oilsPenetrating, burnished hard-surface | Soaks into the grain for a natural look and feel. Needs more hands-on care than a urethane, but wear is simpler to repair. | 24 hours minimum |

Cliff Motteler, second-generation floor sander.
Cliff learned the trade sanding floors in Peoria, Illinois, and worked his way up at a benchmark company there, where he specialized in period-correct wood floor restorations. After working for a local Evergreen company, he started SURFS to close the customer service gap he kept seeing in the sand-and-finish business.
SURFS stands for Step Up Refinishing Flooring Services. We keep the schedule we give you, talk to you straight, and keep investing in training so the work keeps getting better.

What homeowners say about the work.
Cliff came out to us near the foothills, and did a phenomenal job with our detailed flooring project. We removed two island supports which exposed our beat up 1960's hardwood w/screw holes in it. Two other companies declined our project, stating that it could not be blended in with our recently refinished floor. Cliff was able to refinish, and blend them flawlessly.
SURFS Flooring did an incredible job refinishing the wood floors in our home in Genesee, CO. Cliff is highly skilled at his craft, very conscientious about the quality of the work and is an excellent communicator. He completed the job as promised, on schedule with no surprises along the way. The results exceeded our expectations and the floors look fabulous.
How long will we need to be out of the house?
It depends on the finish. Conversion varnish and oil-based polyurethane need 1 to 2 evenings for the coating to dry and the solvents to clear the house. Water-based polyurethane and hardwood oils need at least 24 hours. We'll lay out the schedule for your floor at the estimate.
Is sanding a floor dusty?
We sand with Lagler equipment, which is built to collect dust as it works, so your home stays clean. We also use finishes chosen with indoor air quality in mind, including low-VOC oil options.
Can you blend new boards into an existing floor?
Often, yes. One customer had two kitchen island supports removed, which exposed beat-up 1960s hardwood with screw holes right next to a freshly refinished floor. Two other companies turned the job down. We refinished it and blended the patch in.
Do you subcontract the work?
No. We supply, install and finish wood floors ourselves, so the people you meet at the estimate are the ones responsible for the result.
Why does Colorado's dry air matter for a new floor?
Wood swells and shrinks with the moisture in the air. Wood floors do best at about 30 to 50 percent relative humidity, while Front Range homes without humidity control average about 15 to 20 percent over the year. That's why acclimation takes longer here. We check your home's moisture at the estimate and plan the install around it.
What areas do you serve?
Evergreen and the surrounding foothills, including Genesee, Golden, Morrison and Conifer. If you're nearby and not sure you're in range, just ask.
